•OCT images show reduction in the retinal full thickness and the underlying layers, in particularly the photoreceptor layer.•Vision impairment due to degeneration condition can be related to loss of signal transduction.•Retinal proteins turned to be electrically insulators due to degeneration condition.•Both primary and secondary structure of proteins are influenced by retinal degeneration.•The content of the aromatic amino acids varies with the progress of the degeneration condition.
