•Antarctic particulate matter was captured in filters using a low volume sampler.•An analytical methodology based on Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDS was implemented.•Air pollutants were found, including black carbon, polystyrene and fertilizer.•First detection of microplastics in air from Antarctica.
