•This review discusses the recent literature on novel lignocellulose-acting enzymes.•Progress on enzyme discovery beyond sequence similarity-based tools is shown.•The synergism between main chain and accessory degrading enzymes is highlighted.•The repurpose of LCB-degrading enzymes to fight plastic pollution is discussed.
