Introducing accompanied driving in Denmark. Safety-related differences between youth licensing with immediate or delayed access to solo driving

•Compared to males, females licensing at age 17 are more safety oriented.•A less supportive attitude towards speed limits predicts early licensing.•Parental support is of key importance in accompanied driving.•Minimum requirements are needed to increase driving experience before solo driving.•We profiled the use and users of accompanied driving in Denmark.
