Financial and educational impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in an academic hospital-based tertiary cytopathology practice

•The financial and educational impact of COVID-19 pandemic in our academic hospital-based tertiary cytopathology practice are examined.•The financial recovery curve for our cytopathology was V-shaped, essentially the most ideal economic response to a downturn.•Our residents and fellows welcomed utilization of innovative educational tools including virtual teaching and did not regard absence of one-on-one microscope learning as adversely affecting their education.
