On Hosoya’s dormants and sprouts

•A theoretical answer to a recent question of Haruo Hosoya when a particular type of multiple coalescences of graphs are cospectral.•Findings of extensive computations to enumerate cospectral multiple coalescences are reported.•An infinite family of cospectral coalescences in which the underlying graphs are paths is identified, whose existence was deemed rare by Hosoya.
