•Several lines of evidence were combined to delimit three species of shipworm with entangled taxonomy.•We redescribe, Psiloteredo megotara, P. pentagonalis, and Nototeredo edax.•The analyses exposed more cryptic species in Bankia carinata and Lyrodus pedicellatus.
