Use of official municipal demographics for the estimation of mortality in cities suffering from heavy environmental pollution: Results of the first study on all the neighborhoods of Taranto from 2011 to 2020

•Municipal mortality data are used for the first time for epidemiological purposes in cities suffering from heavy environmental pressure.•The city of Taranto has been chosen as case study and this is the first time that municipal mortality data at neighborhoods level are used for epidemiological purposes.•Our data highlighted increased mortality for all causes in some neighborhoods of Taranto city close to the steel plant and also characterized by high socioeconomic deprivation.
