•Misinformation given to mothers can leak into children’s later event reports.•The degree of interference varies as a function of maternal memory sharing goal.•Children of mothers who focus on accuracy as opposed to talking naturally are especially prone to memory errors.•A focus on accuracy can increase children’s memory errors even when mothers are not misinformed.
