•Fluorine was found in GSR collected from firearms/shooter’s hands/victim’s clothes.•Use of PTFE in gun oils or in bullet/cartridge coatings is a source of F for GSR.•Fluorine cannot be used as chemical marker to exclude any discharging of a firearm.
