Familial resemblance in mental health symptoms, social and cognitive vulnerability, and personality: A study of patients with depressive and anxiety disorders and their siblings

•Siblings of depressed/anxious probands are at high risk for the same disorders.•Unaffected siblings show higher psychosocial vulnerability than controls.•Proband-sibling resemblance in psychopathology-related features was only modest.•Individual mechanisms may differentiate clinical trajectories across the lifespan.•Identifying these mechanisms is crucial to improve resilience in high-risk subjects.
