•Distinct amygdala-dACC interaction patterns were observed between PTSD and controls.•Effective connectivity in prefrontal-amygdala circuitry is increased in PTSD.•We found aberrant communication between amygdala-dACC and central executive network.•PTSD severity negatively correlated amygdala-dACC-middle frontal connectivity.
