We questioned whether a heart rate characteristics (HRC) sepsis risk score displayed to clinicians would modify 18–22 month neurodevelopmental outcomes for extremely low birthweight infants who develop sepsis. Infants allocated to HRC display with sepsis had a 12% absolute reduction in the composite outcome of death or neurodevelopmental impairment.
