•Most preterm infants exhibit regions of high signal intensity on T2 MRI at term.•Debate remains as to whether this signal (DWMA) is pathological.•We quantified DWMA and used graph theory to measure brain network efficiency.•Whole-brain and regional network efficiency at term decreased with greater DWMA.•DWMA in very preterm infants is associated with reduced brain efficiency at term.
