Storage of soil carbon as particulate and mineral associated organic matter in irrigated woody perennial crops

•Soil carbon concentrations doubled under irrigated woody perennial crops.•Decades of cultivation increased both particulate and mineral associated organic carbon.•Limited mineral weathering of parental material meant most C was present as POM.•Carbon isotope differences existed between fractions and were dependent on carbon input.
