Tailoring hierarchical carbon nanotube cellular structure for electromagnetic interference shielding in extreme conditions

•Amorphous carbon coating was able to tailor the pore structures of carbon nanotube foams;•Optimized hierarchical foams showed excellent shielding effectiveness in X-band electromagnetic wave;•The tailored foams exhibited outstanding structural and performance stability in extreme conditions.
