Fluorescence enhancement mechanism of thymolphthalein-based probe by coordination interaction with zinc ion

•The electronic spectrum of T and its Zn(II) complex were assigned theoretically.•Intramolecular multi-proton transfer mechanisms have been proposed.•Fluorescent emission mechanism for the probes was simulated for the first time.•The fluorescent brightness enhancement induced by zinc ion was well explained.
