Systematic study of the material, structure and lacquering techniques of lacquered wooden coffins from the Eastern Regius Tombs of the Qing Dynasty, China

•This article explores the materials, structures and lacquering techniques in the lacquered wooden coffins from Eastern Regius Tombs of the Qing Dynasty, which is the first time to investigate the lacquered wooden coffins of Huixian Shujia and Wulanala.•Using THM-Py-GC/MS combined with several reference databases determined that the main lacquer sap was urushi and heat-bodied tung oil was added in the lacquer film.•Comprehensive analysis of organic and inorganic components and the lacquering techniques (like “Qiang Jin” and “wan lacquering craft”) of the lacquered wooden coffins.
