•Reference and coal-mine field spectral samples reveal AMD-indicator iron minerals.•Sentinel-2 is an important resource for iron feature and abundance estimation.•Special design, Band 8a, of Sentinel-2 enables iron absorption feature detection.•Spectral unmixing methods enable detection of iron features at sub-pixel level.•Calculated abundances and ICP iron levels indicate coherent correlation values.
