Quality of life, walking ability and change of living situation after trochanteric femur fracture in geriatric patients–Comparison between sliding hip screw and cephalomedullary nails from the registry for geriatric trauma

•Institutionalization rate was higher after treatment with Sliding Hip Screw.•Quality of Life was significant higher after treatment with cephalomedullary nail.•No differences were found regarding walking ability, mortality or revision rate.•Pre-surgical time was shorter in patients treated with cephalomedullary nail.
