•Electro-thermal characterization were used to develop a LiFePO4 battery model.•Reduced scale electro-thermal model was developed by using the dimensional analysis.•The scale electro-thermal model is appropriate for HIL real time process.•Performance of the electro-thermal model was analysed for time-accelerated tests.
