•We evaluated the potential use of fermented abalone viscera as a functional food.•Viscera fermented by lactic acid bacteria inhibited ACE.•Inhibition of ACE in mice and rats suppressed blood pressure increases.•The active compound was homarine.•Abalone viscera fermented by lactic acid bacteria could serve as a functional food.
