•An immune phage-displayed library was built with mAb against AFM1 as immunogens.•A sensitivity and specificity nanobody (VHH C4) was firstly screened through phage display technology.•A toxin-free competitive ELISA based on VHH C4 was built for the detection of AFM1 in milk and dairy products.
