•DyVO4 experiences a sequential zircon-scheelite-fergusonite phase transformation under compression.•The scheelite-fergusonite transformation of DyVO4 is sensitive to non-hydrostatic condition.•The bulk modulus of zircon-type and scheelite-type DyVO4 are determined.
