Three-dimensional finite element analysis of top-down crack propagation in asphalt pavements

•Mechanism of top-down cracking propagation was determined based on J-integral.•Non-uniform tire contact stresses were used in the finite element modeling.•Critical location for top-down cracking propagation was identified.•J-integral was shown to be sensitive to pavement structure, asphalt surface layer property and traffic speed.
