•Contribution of tapered and un-tapered section of SF-MZI in sensing is quantified.•A unique constant assigned to a particular compound is enumerated.•Proposed sensor shown highest sensitivity of 224 nm/RIU for KMnO4 reported so far.•Provides scope of single sensing method for detecting biological/chemical entities.
