•DES deposited on the treated solid surface inhibits hydrolytic enzyme access.•Sodium carbonate wash efficiently removes residual DES on treated solids.•Removal of residual DES increases cellulose accessibility to cellulose.•Enhanced cellulose accessibility to cellulase produces high glucose release.
