•2D Fe2O3 with preferentially exposed (012) facet.•The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) was 436.83 mg/g.•Pb(II) adsorption mainly through surface complexation and ion exchange.•Non-layered 2D Fe2O3 could be easily recovered and reused.
