•Mean annual cost for a child followed by CPS was €53,265 in a French cohort.•Over three-quarters of the cost was incurred by CPS itself.•Costs were dependent on the characteristics of the child at admission.•At-term children with no identified psychosocial risk had higher psychiatric costs.•They also had higher health and social care costs.
