Automated sample preparation and analysis by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) for the determination of 3- and 2-monochloropropanediol (MCPD) esters and glycidol esters in edible oils

•MCPD esters and glycidol esters are emerging contaminants in processed food.•The numerous and laborious sample preparation has been carried out by automated sample preparation.•A novel and sensitive GC–MS/MS method has been proposed for the determination of MCPD esters and glycidol esters in edible oils.•The methodology proved fit-for-purpose for the analysis of extra virgin oil samples.•The sensitivity of the method proved potentially suitable also for the determination of MCPD esters and glycidol esters in infant formulas.
