Use of headspace GC/MS combined with chemometric analysis to identify the geographic origins of black tea

•Volatile compounds were identified from 306 black teas using HS-GC/MS.•Forty-eight aroma compounds were common among global tea samples.•Full-spectrum GC/MS data was analyzed using k-Nearest Neighbor.•Discriminant rates of tea from 10 origins were 100%.•Geraniol to linalool ratio in black tea is key for identification of origin.
