Zn and Cu complexes of o-van-gly Schiff base: Syntheses, crystal structures, fluorescence sensing and anticancer properties

•Two new complexes have been obtained through in situ synthesis of ligand in experimental process.•Complex 1 reveals high selectivity and sensitivity for Fe3+/Cu2+ ions, while complex 2 exhibits efficient anticancer activities against tumor cell lines.
