Using remote sensing information to enhance the understanding of the coupling of terrestrial ecosystem evapotranspiration and photosynthesis on a global scale

•A remote sensing (RS) approach (RCEEP) to linking ecosystem water-carbon fluxes.•RCEEP performed better than the existing methods in estimating GPP from ET.•All RS factors in RCEEP acted on a more meaningful relationship between ET and GPP.
