摘要
•What is new?•Key findings•The production of overviews of systematic reviews (OoSRs) has been increasing yearly and, most notably, from January 2017 to October 2020, on average, 19 studies were published each month.•There was no consistent terminology for the study design in the title of the publications. The most frequent label was “overview of systematic reviews”.•Some healthcare categories (e.g., complementary and alternative medicine, psychiatry and psychology) have been investigated more than others (e.g., otorhinolaryngology, dermatology) in our collection of studies.•We found collaborations among authors from different countries (e.g., UK, USA, Canada, and Australia) indicating that OoSRs is a type of publication which can promote scientific cooperation.•What this study adds to what is known?•This study explored, for the first time, the research landscape of a large sample of OoSRs published during the last two decades.•What is the implication and what should change?•The findings of our analysis can inform key stakeholders about trends and gaps in the literature of these studies. International collaborations between overview authors from countries with increased research productivity and countries with less research activity should be encouraged promoting the production of OoSRs in areas of healthcare that are less explored.
