Mössbauer characterization of microbially mediated iron and manganese ores of variable geological ages

•Mössbauer spectroscopy was used for detailed characterization of Fe phases.•XRD and TEM studies were performed on representative samples.•Nanohematite observed was found to be a product of microbial mediation.•Substitutional impurities in various phases reflect syngenetic microbial activity.
