Are banks really special? Evidence from a natural experiment

•Banks can certify the environmental risks of their borrowers.•There is a positive announcement effect for emitters subsequent to Kyoto Protocol ratification.•The bank certification effect is higher for firms with poorer information environment.•The bank certification effect is higher for firms with higher environmental risk ex-ante.
