•Transparent Eu3+-doped Al2O3 ceramics (RIT up to 56.5 %).•Ceramics prepared by slip-casting, pressure-less pre-sintering and post-HIPing.•Dopant segregated at grain boundaries.•High luminescence intensity at low dopant concentration in bulk.•Post-sintering reduction Eu3+ → Eu2+.
