•SmJRB1 is a basic helix-loop-helix transcriptional factor and it expresses highest in roots.•Overexpressing SmJRB1 significantly promotes phenolic acid accumulation.•Rosmarinic acid synthase I gene is the downstream target of SmJRB1.•SmJRB1 interacts with the jasmonate ZIM-domain proteins SmJAZ3 and SmJAZ9.
