•The nuclei-mode highly dominates the particle size distribution under GCI mode.•The particle size corresponded to peak particle number is distributed around 20 nm.•Particle size distribution shifts to the larger size as SOI advanced.•Particle number concentration can be greatly reduced by blending PODEn.•ISPN exhibits increase first and then decrease with the increase of EGR.
