•During decidualization, the endometrial mesenchymal stem cells markers CD140b, CD146, SUSD2 and α-SM actin are downmodulated by DSCs.•DSCs secrete chemotactic factors for monocytes and this activity increases in decidualization.•Decidualized DSCs, but not undifferentiated DSCs, secrete antitumoral factors.
