Amyand’s Hernia: Blending two Surgical Cases in the Same Patient

The combination of an inguinal hernia containing the appendix, either infected or not, leads to another surgical entity, Amyand’s hernia. Its frequency is reported at 1% of all inguinal hernias. Clinical preoperative diagnosis is challenging due to its resemblance to common inguinal hernias. As this type of hernia may be misinterpreted as a ruptured or inflamed appendix, imaging techniques may detect and guide surgical decision making. The treatment methodology may include appendectomy through inguinal sac or laparotomy or even simple reduction and hernioplasty, depending on the appendix inflammation status. The objective of this paper is to display a case of an Amyand’s hernia in a 70-year-old man with our therapeutic approach and to highlight the main points of the literature.
