Living inside of host cells offers major advantages for human pathogens, like nutrient accessibility or the escape from the host’s immune system. However, host cell exit is mandatory for further progression and propagation of the pathogen. Three pathways of tightly regulated host cell exit have been described, of which one or more are exploited by intracellular organisms. As this step is an optimal target for drug development, the investigation of exit mechanisms is of great interest.
