No glory without sacrifice — drivers of climate (in)action in the general population

•We investigate drivers of three types of climate-friendly behaviors.•Willingness to sacrifice, an intrinsic motivation, is the strongest predictor.•Demographic factors, such as age and gender, only have minor explanatory power.•Education level and concern seem not to play a role in predicting behaviors.•Most important factors cannot be addressed through classic policy approaches.
