Multi-element signature of cuttlefish and its potential for the discrimination of different geographical provenances and traceability

•First example for differentiation of cuttlefish byICP-MS and chemometric analysis.•Chemometric alignment of ICP-MS data allows samples discrimination by origin.•VIP-PLS-DA using a total of 23 elements returned the most accurate classification.•Regardless the methodology, common markers of origin were Na, B, Co, Cu, Cd, and U.•Chioggia (Italy) cuttlefish can be discriminated from other geographical catch area.
