•Word retrieval may involve inhibitory processing of related words.•An fMRI anagram-solving paradigm was used to study word-retrieval inhibition.•The left DLPFC was associated with inhibition in word retrieval.•Activity in the left DLPFC was negatively correlated with language cortex activity.•The left DLPFC appears to inhibit language cortex during word retrieval.
