•Validated GC-HRMS method for the determining SCCPs and MCCPs in oils and fish.•Asia-originated oils were more contaminated by SCCPs and MCCPs than European oils.•Vegetable oils contained mostly Cl6 and Cl7 congeners.•Congeners containing Cl9 and Cl10 were the most predominant in fish samples.
