Performance and regulated emissions of a medium-duty diesel engine fueled with biofuels from sugarcane over the European steady cycle (ESC)

•Sugarcane biodiesel and diesel farnesane were tested in a medium duty engine.•Emissions are analyzed using the ratio of exhaust gas temperature to available energy.•Sugarcane biodiesel shows a significant reduction of specific NOx emissions.•PM specific emissions are significantly lower for sugarcane diesel farnesane.•Sugarcane biodiesel inhibits the oxidation process of CO emissions at the DOC.
