•A comprehensive review of the literatures related to the reduction of motion-induced errors in phase shifting profilometry is conducted.•Existing approaches are categorized into object tracking-based approaches, Fourier-assisted approaches, motion prediction approaches and other approaches, with principles elaborated.•Guidance on the selection of appropriate methods based on application and suggestions on future directions are provided.
