Growth and form of giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in a plantation spacing trial after 28 years

•Giant sequoias are able to produce merchantable timber at a young age.•Across all densities, sequoias are able to sequester large amounts of carbon quickly.•Differences in initial growth rates among spacings impact long-term trajectories.•Giant sequoia exhibited very little (<2%) mortality after 28 years.
