•Novel trinuclear iron(III) acetate as with uncoordinated hexamine.•The complex has been structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction.•The impact of hexamine on intermolecular interactions was studied.•High-spin iron ions in +3 oxidation state with non-Curie-like behaviour.•Antiferromagnetic interactions between the three individual Fe(III) ions.
